Squeaky Wheel is a nonprofit arts organization in Buffalo, New York. We call this visual identity system “Still Rendering,” a play on the process of making film and new media art in the digital age. How might we uncover and lift up the artifacts of process—the messy elements in between, the low-res images that clash with ultra-high res 3D rendering, the glitches and missing links, and the liminal space between making and final output.

As part of the project, we created a comprehensive visual identity guide that included templates for print and digital content. The logo system is less of a traditional “logo” and more of an action. Playing off ideas of video and file rendering, one letter in the wordmark is always the “missing link,” or the “squeaky wheel.” This is not a static logo—instead it is a way of behaving that can play out in countless variations.
