Clemson University recently launched the first issue of INTER-, a student-edited architectural journal. Playing off the concept of “The Third Place,” the design takes advantage of the affordances of print to explore concepts of the in-between, interspersed, and interrupted. The main letterforms of the journal title are deconstructed into form and counter-form, becoming architectural building blocks that lead the reader through each section of the publication. Abstract geometric shapes line each of the pages, coming together to spell out the theme of the issue on the outside edge of the book—itself an overlooked third place that exists neither fully inside nor outside the book.
